Dear
Reader,
Welcome to a celebration of the life and work of Hugh Kappel, a fine
artist...
I knew
him as my grandfather, an affable and kind man, though he died in the
mid-eighties when I was a child, too young to appreciate his unique
contribution to the art world. In fact, I knew little of his work
until quite recently. Upon his death, his art studio treasures were stored
for posterity's sake in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, thanks to the
foresight and concern of its curator, Stewart Turnquist.
Having recently
visited the Institute for the first time, I photographed
the artwork contained in the collection for the world to see. Though not all the work is
represented online, the slideshow on this website
aims to display the vast bulk of his casual sketches, works in progress, and
finished pieces. Even so, this collection in itself is but a small sampling of the
known work he produced during his lifetime. If you
have knowledge of additional paintings, sculptures, or artwork, please
contact me.
For a richer understanding of his work, please visit this brief yet
important biography. |
